Last weekend artist Angela Babby installed a 6'x7' commissioned artwork entitled "Return of White Buffalo Calf Woman" in the new addition at the Red Cloud High School, Pine Ridge, South Dakota. The artwork is made entirely of art glass and grout. Some of the pieces of glass, such as the face, hands, buffalo, bead work and buckskin dress are painted with enamel and fired in a kiln creating glass on glass tiles. After all of the pieces of glass are enameled, cut and ground, they are adhered to tile board and grouted. The artwork took a little under a year to create, honors our creation story and is meant to express the pride we feel in our heritage and culture.

Wow, that is lovely. It's on display at a high school? I wish more schools would commission pieces like this. I feel that it would raise awareness of the current issues facing Native Americans among youth across the nation.
