A Red Fox Appeared in the Window

Location: Perry Twp., Lake County, Ohio

My neighbor and I went to talk with an attorney to see what we should be doing to stop a high level bridge that will be built at the end of our road. This bridge will disturb the burial ground of ancient Native Americans who were buried in this site. This bridge was stopped twice by Native Americans. In 2004-2008 the issue was pushed as a “request from Homeland Security due to a near-by Nuclear Power Plant and the possibility of a terrorist attack, on an almost 20 year old power plant. This was proved to be untrue and is now referred to as an “error”. It is now being pushed because the old low level bridge needs to be replaced (and has for over 40 years). We suggested choosing another location but this was rejected by the Engineer.

The County Engineer said Aug. 21, 2009 in a letter to Senator Tim Grendell, regarding site 33LA158 (the burial ground), that his goal is “to protect known Native American burial remains. The proposed alternatives were developed and designed to avoid impacts to this site. Previously developed plans would have affected this site by excavating for the proposed roadway within the known burial site. The current Feasible Alternatives have been refined to eliminate the need for this excavation, effectively eliminating any negative impact on the burial remains.” He then goes on to say “at this time, however it is inconclusive whether construction is needed along State route 84 and if this may result in an impact to site 33LA158” (your grandmother’s resting place).

This entire project has been riddled with errors, inconsistencies, inaccurate reporting and finger pointing. As we sat in the attorney’s office located in a bustling commercial area of Mentor, Ohio a red fox trotted past the window. The event spoke loudly to both of us.

If you oppose desecration of the burial ground for the project entitled:
LAK Vrooman Road PID 5669
Please send me an e-mail at: pbmodel48@yahoo.com and I will forward it to the tribes who will be contacted by the Ohio Dept of Transportation for their input.

Thank you.

Shame on those people. It just goes to show that there's still no respect for the Native American people or burial grounds.
