Dear Mr. President, from one of your country’s Native Daughters.
My family spans the history of this land,
In the snow, in the east, or on islands of sand
Whether Mayflower, Land-bridge, or creation by bird
I feel somewhat qualified, at least to be heard.
It is with hope and inspiration I write Mr. President
Our energy and focus seems to be not so well spent.
We’re spinning our wheels for the same sort of outcome
When really maybe we should have tried to have outdone
Tis our forefathers who built the world that we live in
Our forefathers who helped us go into this tailspin
It seems that we’re not looking nearly far enough back
To find the forefathers who’ll set us on the right track
Many of our nation’s great ideas and foundations
Were learned by listening to indigenous nations
To people who lived in this place for much longer
To those people we sentenced to “go over yonder”
I’m proud to hear that you’ve asked for suggestions
From people who listen to all four directions
These people have stories that go farther back in history
And lessons that have proven true, for that is no mystery.
Whether attachment parenting or democracy’s base
It’s true that these people still deserve a voice and a place
And that place isn’t just to submit some cold dissertation
It’s to be an honored member of your administration.
So with this, I ask, please consider my prose
Do think about this; please don’t stick up your nose
Though I’m not pure, not all native or import
I’m mixed, very mixed, but feel obliged to report.
I am hopeful that you, Mr. President will
Consider outsiders for positions you fill
Consider people whose experiences and lives have explored
Life paths and perspectives prior presidents have ignored.
