Desecration

In 1996 Archeologists conducted a study on land at the corner of Lane Road & State Route 84 in Painesville Twp., in Lake County, Ohio. It has been previously determined that this approximately 3 acre site contained ancient human remains, per a study in 1986. Because the County Engineer is proposing a high level bridge that would disturb this burial area, I asked permission, twice, to review the records of the 1996 study. There was no response, so I drove to his office to ask to see the records.

One of the engineers brought out a little book and said it was not available to be copied, but I could look at it, in his presence. He said that "the State (Ohio) needed to release the book and that should be soon." I interpreted this to mean that he felt that the tribes would be giving their permission to disturb this property, for the completion of a bridge. He did not say this, it was my interpretation.

In the book from the archeological study there were many pages which explained how to complete a survey on burial grounds in the appropriate manner. Further into the book I did find a section that stated "there were 6-7 individuals located, including a baby". The map that accompanied the book showed the area with notations of digging sites used in this study.

My neighbors and I oppose this bridge and have been writing to officials throughout Lake County and the State. We have a web site now, "bridge-facts.info" to explain to interested individuals what has been taking place. Initially this bridge was promoted by the concept of being requested by Homeland Security as an emergency evacuation route from the Perry Nuclear Power Plant. When we proved this never happened it was called "an error" by the consultant and now the main push for the bridge is the traffic accident rate. Per the local Sheriff's Office there is an average of 4 accidents per year, including deer hits and slide offs due to snow.

The Engineer wants a high level bridge to allow semi-trucks to drive down this rural road to the freeway. Does this justify the desecration of those who lived here long before any of us? The Spirits do not want these ancestors disturbed. If you agree please write regarding this project called LAK VROOMAN ROAD BRIDGE PROJECT, PID 5669

Write to: LTC Daniel B. Snead, District Commander, US Army Corp of Engineers, Buffalo Office, 1776 Niagara Street, Buffalo, NY 14207-3199
Please tell your friends about this. These are 7 people, not just "documented remains".

The whiteman knows nothing of spiritual sanctuary... Resting place for the passed on. They are so disconnected from the Mother Earth. One needs to sit and listen all day long in the wilderness in quiet meditation... might feel something good..

In addition to being racist and intolerant Jim’s comment is ignorant and selfish.

There is no a priori justification for accepting an inherent supremacy of supernatural belief systems he has projected onto culturally disassociated prehistoric populations.

It is equally valid to believe nothing and consider these bones inanimate remains of people whose beliefs cannot be known.

To judge one point of view as better in some fundamental way than another belittles and disrespects all people; native and nonnative. It is puerile and bigoted.

If he, or anyone, wants to believe that there is magic associated with the bones that is fine, but lashing out with racial epithets is uncalled for and hardly conducive to achieving a place of respect in the conversation.

As an archaeologist I have to say that these surveys are done for a reason, and that to ignore them in favor of building a bridge through a burial site and withholding information is a real travesty.

To the Yay Sayers and/or believers other spiritual beliefs I pose these 2 questions. What would u say if these engineers used the same logic/reason to build a bridge through ur relative's grave yard? Would u gladly say yes or would you be outraged?

It is wrong for any burial site to be disturbed. Just because these were native american remains, it seems that progress should be stopped. No, I would not allow the State or US Government to place a bridge, road,or for any other reason to disturb.

Jim- Being white has nothing to do with it. Either you show respect for the dead or you don't but it is a personal, shallow decision to desecrate a burial site for self-gain. Race has nothing to do with it.

This is a beautiful area and does not need to be disturbed. I feel for the people who live on Vrooman Rd. and want them to know my husband and I will help them with this anyway we can. We are all related.

Isn't this really about money and greedy Osborne needing to pipe water and sewer under the bridge to Leroy so that he can overdevelop Leroy just as he has Mentor? This is the real reason for the push of the bridge! Not evacuation routes or accidents.

What tribe would it be? Most Likely a Oklahoma tribe? Miamis - Potawatommi's - Sac/Fox - Shawnee who? If it's Corps of Engineers they need to go through the NHPA/Section 106 Process which means they need to consult with the most likely descendants.
