On November 9th, the American Indian Center of Chicago's Trickster Gallery unveiled "Heart of the Basket Maker", a beautiful bronze sculpture prominently displayed outside of the gallery. The sculpture was created by Jemez Pueblo artist, Cliff Fragua. Cliff was chosen from a group of artists who submitted their artwork to the Village of Schaumburg, who was looking to commission a permanent sculpture for Trickster Gallery as part of their 1% For Arts Program. Cliff's "Heart of the Basket Maker" was chosen.
This long awaited event took place with a prayer ceremony, drum pounding and voices singing. This was a very special moment for those involved with the American Indian Center of Chicago, Trickster Gallery, and all those who helped bring the gallery into it's own in the 3 years since it's doors opened. Schaumburg has given the Indian Center a place for Native Americans to call home, and a place for anyone to learn and enjoy the culture.
Speakers included Artist Cliff Fragua, Mayor Al Larson, Ojibwe Elder Starr Bresette, American Indian Center of Chicago Executive Director Joe Podlasek, and Board President, Debra Valentino. Guests included members of the Indian community, local media, and the public.
Cliff Fragua's art can be seen at www.singingstonestudio.com and on display at River Trading Post.

As an artist who attended the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, NM, while looking at this picture reminds me of the Southwest filled with so much art and culture. This reminds me of Allen Housers sculpture garden at the IAIA museum.
