Thunderbirds

By Lisa Newton

The ghosts of hollow bones lift to the blue sky
Red streaks of paint follows them like a heat wave
Each flap of the wings threatens to send more lightning
The pungent black eyes stab into your soul through your careless dreams

What does this mean?
To a girl who carries the red skin and long black hair
but doesn’t know how it got there
To a girl who has lost her lineage and wanders in the 21st century
To a girl who can only read these letters and
only understand these words
To a girl whose father wears the sweet perfume of Jack Daniels
And is constantly seduced by Johnnie Walker
To a girl like
me?

These thunderbirds are just a dream
