‘Shocked’ by border dump

Thank you for the very fine article, “Christmas for babies in the dump,” by Mary Kim Titla, which appeared in the Sept. 16 [Vol. 29, No. 15] edition of your excellent newspaper.

Every time my husband and I have driven across the U.S./Mexico border into Mexico I have felt overwhelmed by shock, really, that people are actually living in such a place, in such conditions. Only minutes from the United States, and in clear view of a highway.

I have tried to describe this “city” to friends and family back home in Massachusetts, but haven’t really been able to convey it very effectively. I can now show Mary Kim Titla’s story to people.

There was, amazingly, uplift and inspiration in her story – Pastor Hector Lopez’s childhood in such a place and how setting his goals on education enabled him to leave that place (and yet return, years later, with abilities and compassion
to help).

Is there some address where people can send goods (clothing, canned goods) and or money to help those who live in “the dump” in Nogales?
