Hualapai Tribe named Grand Canyon’s official representative in campaign

GRAND CANYON WEST, Ariz. – The Hualapai Tribe, whose roots in Grand Canyon go back centuries, is the canyon’s official New7Wonders representative. The tribe is working with the nonprofit New7Wonders Foundation to support the Grand Canyon as being recognized as one of the New7Wonders of Nature.

Nominees are selected by a worldwide audience and winners are ranked via the number of votes they receive at www.new7wonders.com.

The national qualification phase of the campaign ends Dec. 31. All countries will narrow their nominees to only one location that will represent the country as of January 2009. Currently, the Grand Canyon is leading the vote in the United States and is ranked No. 33 among more than 400 sites worldwide.

“The Grand Canyon is a very special place for the Hualapai people and we are very proud of becoming the official representatives for the New7Wonders of Nature campaign,” said Wilfred Whatoname Jr., Hualapai tribal member. “We are looking forward to the opportunity to continue to represent this amazing natural wonder to the world.”

The New7Wonders Foundation found the Hualapai Tribe to be the ideal ambassadors for the Grand Canyon thanks to its close ties to the area and commitment to preserving and sharing its beauty.

“The Hualapai Tribe is sharing its pride in and love for the Grand Canyon with people everywhere. It is their home, and what a magnificent place to call home,” said Bernard Weber, founder and president of the New7Wonders Foundation.

“The goal of New7Wonders is to encourage global dialogue and broaden horizons. I could not think of better ambassadors for this striking natural monument. Not only do the Hualapai show us its beauty, but also share their culture and history, linked strongly with the Grand Canyon.”
