WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Tim Johnson, D-S.D., recently welcomed Sonia Hernandez of Gayville, S.D., to his Washington, D.C. office. A graduate of Gayville-Volin High School, Hernandez is the daughter of Claire Packard of Gayville and Sal Hernandez of Vermillion. A member of the Yankton-Sioux Tribe, Hernandez is currently a sophomore at the University of South Dakota majoring in political science.

“Through internships, students gain valuable insight into the political and legislative process in Washington,” Johnson said. “I am glad Sonia has been able to join us this spring and I know she has been making the most of her experience.”

“I am particularly interested in education reform,” Hernandez said. “I feel this internship will allow me to better understand the aspects of this issue and of the legislative process in general.”

The Washington, D.C. internship program matches interns’ interests to South Dakota and federal issues while providing a first-hand opportunity to experience a wide range of office duties. Interns may attend hearings, research issues for projects, and work with the office administrative staff.

College sophomores, juniors and seniors are encouraged to apply for Johnson’s upcoming summer internship program. College credits or a stipend are available.
