By The Associated Press

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) – The South Dakota Department of Education has named a new state director of Indian education.

LuAnn Werdel, of Chadron, Neb., is an enrolled member of the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Tribe. She holds a master’s degree in educational administration and curriculum from the University of Oklahoma.

She began her duties Jan. 25, replacing Stuart Zephier, who has been serving as interim director since Keith Moore resigned last August to become chief diversity officer at the University of South Dakota.
