Peltier denied parole

By Gale Courey Toensing

BISMARCK, N.D. — American Indian activist Leonard Peltier, imprisoned since 1977 for the deaths of two FBI agents, has been denied parole after authorities decided that releasing him would diminish the seriousness of his crime, the Associated Press reported in mid-afternoon on Aug. 21.

Peltier had his first parole hearing in 16 years in July. He will not be eligible for parole again until July 2024, when he will be 79 years old.

U.S. Attorney Drew Wrigley announced the decision of the U.S. Parole Commission.

Peltier is serving two life sentences for the deaths of FBI agents Jack Coler and Ronald Williams during a June 26, 1975, shootout on South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. He was convicted in Fargo, N.D., in 1977.

He has said the FBI framed him, which the agency denies. He has been denied parole numerous times.

Thomas J. Harrington, Executive Assistant Director, FBI Criminal, Cyber, Response, and Services Branch, issued the following statement:

“The FBI family has never forgotten the ultimate sacrifice made by FBI Special Agents Jack Coler and Ronald Williams, and we fully support the decision of the United States Parole Commission to deny parole to Leonard Peltier. His callous criminal acts demonstrated a complete disrespect for human life and for the law. His time served in jail for their 1975 murders has not diminished the brutality of his crimes or the pain and sorrow felt by the families of his victims or the FBI family.”

Quit your whining. People, this has been happening since the beginning of the United States do you think it would be different now? Remember some people have to suffer so that we can learn from them and understand that LIFE IS NOT FAIR. A conquered people does not write the history. Truth is in the eye of the beholder. Sucks huh.... Maybe he did it, maybe he didn't I really don't care. I am more worried about what's in the future then what's in the past. Let it go people.

Now that the news has finally sunk in, now that I have read these comments, it is one more thing we have to educate the younger generations about. Many of the young ones don't even know who LP is until they are asked to learn about him and his situation. Let's educate and celebrate our future generations by making sure they all know about LP. We are all LP and if there is no justice, then there will be no peace which seems to suit the suits just fine.

None of us were there, white or Indian, but there is absolutely no honor in head-shooting two already wounded men. They still had guns but didn't fire at Peltier and others as they approached. Just as if they were Indians laying wounded and executed, there is no honor. Joe Stuntz was shot in the head from long distance as he was firing at responding cops coming across a field. Stuntz was covering the retreat/escape of those from the Jumping Bull property, that's a firefight, not an execution.

If the Indians here and elsewhere compare Peltier to Tecumseh, Crazy Horse and Geronimo, it is a heroless world in which we live. In whatever language of your people you speak, including English, "hero" would not be Peltier for shooting two wounded men after they surrendered. I would call myself an "advocate" for all people, but mainly Indians, but I am saddened to see this man compared to truly great men who were defending their people and culture. Defender is another word not for Peltier.

So, if Peltier is serving for his crime, what about all the atrocities committed against indigenous peoples and all the indian women who are violated and killed by white men? Do they get double life sentences? If the law has a double standard for whites and indians, then the law is broken, fix it and stop acting as though Peltier is the most horrific person ever - the media and the government use him to justify their own self righteousne

I am greatly saddened, but not surprised that Peltier was not pardoned. In spite of a mountain of evidence and testimony that he did not kill those agents and that he was framed for it, proves there is a government agenda to keep him in prison. However, you do not have to be Native to get screwed by the government. Being poor, progressive, or non-white all qualify you for this abuse. That it continues to happen to First Nations people is especially bad. See next post-

It's not suprising Peltier was not paroled. Spending a long time in prison does not erase the crime, or make it okay. If he didn't do it he would have told who did by now.He isn't such a martyr that he would pay for someone else's crime. This is a cold, heartless man who thought nothing of killing people. The fact that he executed anybody(red or white)is dispicable. If the President pardoned Peltier, why not all the murderers? Being Native doesn't make his crime any different, or forgivable.

The FBI put on presentations of the murders of Coler and Williams. What stood out is the fact that these men were executed with .223 rounds to the head after one was mortally wounded and the other essentially surrended and allowed Roubideaux, Butler, and Peltier to walk up on him. He too was wounded and surrendered. Indians had it bad and many were shot like this in the 1800's, etc., but this was not an honorable act or heroic act of self-defense. Leonard is no hero for killing these men.

@Steve, you're a sellout. Why do people like you feel that by stating you're a "native" you deserve more credibility? Perhaps if you had endured what the people at Pine Ridge had endured prior to the incident, you would understand the politics behind it. Unfortunately you've chosen to sell out rather than research and learn anything.

Yea, there is justice. I still love the lack of logic. Well Scotland freed the Lockerbie bomber, the FBI sharpshooter in Idaho, etc, etc, etc. There are always injustices to point at.....so lets just open the prison doors and let all the prisoners go free........I know if you asked, the majority of them would tell you they are innocent. I for one, am glad he was denied parole. I hope for justices sake, that he serve his entire sentence. Native that does NOT buy into the Poor Leonard song

America did NOT free that Lockerbie plane bomber. That was Scotland.

In Idaho, an FBI sharpshooter showed disrespect for human life, motherhood, and the law when he shot a mother as she held her baby in her arms. It was evident she posed no danger to him. He got off scot free. Is there equality under the law, here? Imagine the pain and sorrow of her family.

I am not surprised. We are immune to the travesty of justice, the lip service to human rights that so characterize this world today. Some voices are not to be heard precisely because they illegitimise the dominant narratives of history. peltier is one such voice the powers that be in the u.s. need to silence. or else, histories would have to be rewritten. in solidarity and with fellow feelings from india.

I agree this is BS. They needed a fall guy and the picked Leonard Peltier. The president should do the next right thing and pardon him.

We won't parole Mr. Peltier, but we will release a man who killed far more people in a terrorist act. Doesn't that just make you proud to be an American??
