AKWESASNE – With bridges to both the United States and Canada closed, the Mohawk people of Akwesasne and their supporters gathered at the Canadian customs building on Cornwall Island spent most of Monday without land access to the outside world. But while the protest at the border crossing remained peaceful and generally upbeat, concern over how long the situation might last contributed to a sense of underlying tension.
The island the Mohawks call Kahwehnoke is part of their territory that spans the St. Lawrence River between New York state and the provinces of Ontario and Quebec. Leaders of the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, the elected community government for the northern portion of territory, have vigorously protested a plan by the Canadian Border Service Agency to arm its border guards on the island on June 1. This date coincides with the implementation of new identification requirements of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative and a recent partnership between the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Canada’s Ministry of Public Safety to coordinate resources at border crossings.
Shortly before midnight Sunday CBSA personnel quietly vacated their posts while about 200 Mohawks observed from across a parking lot. This triggered an automatic shutdown of the north span of the Three Nations Bridge Crossing to Ontario, followed by the blockage of the south span to the U.S. by the New York State police. Overnight, the Canadian and U.S. flags were removed from their staffs at the foot of the south span by persons unknown, leaving only an MCA flag raised. Residents cross this line frequently for work, school and recreation. They tolerate its presence but are resentful of the oppressive policies that come with it.
“As of today, we have not heard from the government of Canada regarding the closure,” said Tim Thompson, MCA Grand Chief, on Monday afternoon. “Our community is being squeezed to the limit at both ends. Our people are stranded on our territory.”
Despite a statement by Peter Van Loan, Canada’s Minister of Public Safety, warning the northern span would remain closed until “the local Mohawk band indicates they’re willing to accept the border officers being armed as is government policy,” the bridge re-opened Monday evening and will remain so indefinitely.
Calling the bridge shutdown a “scare tactic,” former MCA Grand Chief and respected community leader Mike Mitchell reflected on the day’s events.
“Unfortunately, both governments in the U.S. and Canada are new governments,” Mitchell said. “They are not very well aware of indigenous issues. They think one size fits all, but this is a unique situation. … If the minister had appointed people to come and learn about this community, this would not have happened.”

The US government estimated that over 3600 Chinese were smuggled into the US through Akwesasne in 1997 and 1998 alone. I'm sure the natives would love the government to leave them alone so they can smuggle more people and drugs. The native lands need to be respected, but they aren't being good neighbors. Tear down the south bridge, solve the problem.

I was there when the Border Guards left and I support every action my people have taken. We have been voicing our concerns for years now, there is documentation that the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne tried to communicate with the Ministry and the Border Agency that is community driven. Simply put, we want our voices to be heard, I live in that neighborhood and don't want to see one of my relatives dead or wounded.

Good for the Ganyagehaga(Mohawk)people! Its their land and they need to be respected for their needs and values in their own territory. If Canada and the US would be respectful to other Nations around the world they wouldn't havta be so afraid of others. Fear can be a disease also and an epedemic!! This is why they want the guns because they are guilty of mistreating others and know about Karma.

I believe the larger goal is accountability by the CBSA and for the CBSA to meet at least a minimum standard of controls regarding firearms, the history between the Mohawk community and the Customs has been nothing less then tense this is simply the tipping point, The Customs Agents have not exibited common sense professionalim when dealing with local Mohawk "residents." In addition to these problems would you want armed Federal Officials patrolling your streets if so what does that become??

I also want to add a second comment speaking directly to the larger issue at work in these circumstances, and with the knowledge that this publication was purchased by my own nation, Onyota a:ka, that, for one, it pleases me to be reading a fairly well balanced reportage on this event, and second, that I sincerely hope to see our own nation become united again, according with our traditions & in natural unity/accord with the Haudenosaunee league.

Canadians & Americans must educate themselves of the simple fact that it is entirely within the sovereign & jurisdictional right for the Akwesasne Mohawk community to oppose the arming of foreign border patrol agents within their & our collective territory. Given the history of bad faith, deceit & genocidal tendencies which the colonial entities named have shown through the centuries since their arrival, you should be ashamed to be Canadians & Americans. That is all.

The US/Canadian governments should tear down the south bridge from that island to the US mainland, and build another span that does not cross tribal land. The natives should police their land to stop all of the smuggling by the tribal members and others that is rampant in that area.

We knew in the early 90's the Union for the Border Agents was asking for all Canadian Guards to carry weapons. Over a year ago the law went into effect. So why wait until the last month to stage a protest? Hollywood politics sometimes can be effective, other times it works against you. How will this play out??????
