Ski Pioneers

By Leeanne Root

Suzy Chaffee inspired fellow Canadian Olympic downhiller, Steve Podborsky, at Vail in 2004, to start programs for their First Nations. He teamed up with Aaron Marchant (Squamish) and raised $3 million from the British Columbia government to develop snowboarders for the Vancouver Olympics.

Aaron then helped the Tulalips develop a snowboard team at Steven’s Pass, Wash., and invited them to their clinic in Sun Peaks in December. John Gifford, the manager of Steven’s Pass and president of the Washington Ski Areas Association was so pleased with the program that he wants to spread it across the state.
