At Grassy Narrows and Wabaseemoong First Nations in Ontario, Canada, many people have been diagnosed with Minamata disease (mercury poisoning). Many people in these two communities also have Type 2 diabetes.
Both communities were exposed simultaneously to mercury, dioxins and furans from their fish and wild meat. Industrial pollution was the source of the contamination. Although they were tested for mercury, the people were never tested for dioxin or other toxins such as arsenic, cadmium and hexachlorobenzene which have recently been linked to diabetes in a variety of studies. Some of these toxins are still being released by the pulp mill at Dryden, Ontario.
Few studies in the world seem to look at the effects of simultaneous exposures to pollutants. A very recent study did just that and discovered that simultaneous exposure to mercury, dioxins and furans resulted in increased insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is a risk factor for diabetes.
When looking at connections between pollutants and diabetes, scientists should investigate multiple exposures and the synergistic effect they may have in relation to the onset of Type 2 diabetes.

Finding a cure through medication would be helpful, but as you know, a lot could be done by all of us thru controlling ollutants, proper diet and exercise. But if circumstances exist whereby medication is needed, I wanted to possible help some people out there by letting them know about a site that few people know about, but can help greatly in paying less for all their medications, diabetes included. The site is www.medpap.ws and tho the printable savings coupon is "free," the "catch" is that they want you in their store hoping you will impulse shop and pick up other items while you are there. Just be smart, enjoy the savings.

Babies are coming into this world pre-polluted with toxic chemicals. Environmental Working Group tested the umbilical cord blood of 10 Americans, nearly 300 chemicals, including BPA, perchlorate, fire retardants, lead, mercury, and PCBs were found. The best way to stop this pre-pollution is to enact the Kid-Safe Chemicals Act, which would require that chemicals be proven safe for children before they can be sold but lawmakers in Washington need to know that you want them to reform our broken toxics law. Speak up for change. Our kids deserve it. Please demand that Congress take action to make chemicals in consumer products kid-safe.

Only from another country, could one blame chemicals for the many sickness plaguing the Natives of this nation. IHS will never admit this, much less any governmental branch or big business. Progress will be the downfall of our people, yet most embrace with open arms, the need to conform to non-native lifestyles. Those natives who emphasize traditional values are playing an important role and must be respected for their point of view. When we have all merged into the "melting pot" of this nation these life or death issues will no longer be necessary - help!
