Nez Perce get stimulus funds to clean up tanks

By The Associated Press

LAPWAI, Idaho (AP) – The Nez Perce tribe will benefit from a federal cash infusion of $430,000 to help clean up a pair of underground storage tanks on its northcentral Idaho reservation.

This Environmental Protection Agency money is part of $197 million appropriated under the 2009 federal stimulus act to address petroleum contamination from leaking underground storage tanks.

Elsewhere in Indian country, other tribes are benefiting from a total $6.3 million share.

The Nez Perce tribe gets its drinking water from underground sources, and those could be at risk if the old fuel continues to seep into the ground.

The reservation’s underground storage tanks due to be cleaned up are located in Craigmont, at the Bovey Oil site, as well as at a service station in Ferdinand.
